Loving v. Virginia:  40th Anniversary:  June 12th 1967.  The U.S. Supreme Court decision in Loving v Virginia swept away all 16 remaining state laws prohibiting interracial marriages.

National Baseball Hall of Fame Dedicated:  Anniversary:  June 12th, 1939.  The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, Inc., was dedicated at Cooperstown, NY.  More than 200 individuals have been honoured for their contributions to the game.

Space Milestone:  Vostok 6 (USSR):  First Woman in Space, June 16th, 1963.   Valentina Tereshkova, 26, was a former cotton-mill worker who became the first woman in space.  She manually controlled Vostok 6 during the 70.8 hour flight through 48 orbits of Earth and landed by parachute.

Space Milestone:  First American woman in space, June 18th, 1983.  Dr. Sally Ride, 32 year old physicist and pilot, functioned as “mission specialist.”  It was described as a near perfect mission.

World Sauntering Day:  A day to revive the lost art of Victorian sauntering and to discourage jogging, lollygagging, sashaying, fast waking and trotting.

Spanish-American war surrender of Guam to U.S. Anniversary, June 20th, 1898.  Not knowing that a war was in progress and having no ammunition on the island, the Spanish commander of Guam surrendered to Captain Glass of the USS Charleston.

United Nations:  World Refugee Day, June 20th.   A day to bring attention to the situation of refugees – their rights as well as their suffering.  www.un.org

First Doctor of Science Degree, earned by a woman:  June 20th, 1895.  Caroline Willard Baldwin became the first woman to earn a doctor of science degree at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY.

Death Penalty Banned:  35th Anniversary:   June 29, 1972, a decision was made to spare the lives of 600 individuals sitting on death row.  The Supreme Court found that capital punishment a violation of the 8th Amendment which prohibits “cruel and unusual punishment.”  Later the court reversed its decision and lifted the ban on January 15th, 1977.

Seychelles:  Independence Day:  June 29.   National holiday.  Gained independence from Great Britain in 1976. 

Space Milestone:  Atlantis (US) and MIR (USSR) Dock:  1995.  An American space shuttle docked with a Russian space station for the first time, resulting in the biggest craft ever assembled in space.

Britain Cedes Claim to Hong Kong:  10th Anniversary:  June 30th, 1997.  The crested flag of the British Crown Colony was officially lowered at midnight and replaced by a new flag representing China’s sovereignty and the official transfer of power.  Though Britain owned Hong Kong in perpetuity, the land areas surrounding the city were leased from China and the lease expired July 1st, 1997.  Rather than renegotiate a new lease, Britain ceded its claim to Hong Kong.
